Just finding a balance – everyone is basically saying the same thing – everyone just goes about it in a different way
The first thing to say is that what is happening here is, FAR goes beyond the powers of a single Minister of Health.
It was said – let the experts decide – epidemiologists, mathematicians, virologists. But they have a very narrow focus by the nature of their profession. So stop spread – flatten curves, to count life. But their predictions show that it's not actually possible. Life is simply not just mathematics.
Moreover, these experts unfortunately have one thing in common (including Minister Prymula and his advisors and advisors to most foreign governments) – complete ignorance of society, life, culture and other fields. They only defend their little corner of the world with the completely tunnel vision of a scientist „we must prevent the spread!“ Without any overlap or broader context.
And this is unfortunately the result – their words and actions are proof of this. Minister Prymula, for example, thinks that he is not restricting the economy if he „only“ restricts leisure activities. But these „leisure“ activities provide a livelihood for hundreds of thousands of people and thousands more are dependent on them. That singing in a grand opera is worse than acting in a small space. So I have to assume that he has never been to either and lives only in the world of numbers.
But they are right – the only way to prevent an epidemic is to stop people from socializing. There is simply nothing else, and everything, including masks, is just a small crutch with a hard-to-measure effect. The ideal option for epidemiologists would be – everyone completely alone for three weeks – and it is true, the virus would then naturally disappear.
Then there is, of course, the second camp of people (whose opinion I share) who think that Covid is not a plague or Ebola, its mortality rate is nowhere near that and it does not threaten society in its essence at all. It only threatens a percentage of the population at risk and if it is not better than destroying everything, closing it down and wasting 35 million a day on testing asymptomatic people, it would be better to buy hundreds more ICU beds with that money, pay healthcare workers properly, equip people at risk with respirators and gloves and let the epidemic pass through the population normally and subside.
We all have the same goal – to survive the epidemic. Every doctor knows that treatment alone must not NEVER cause more harm than good. But it seems to us that here the treatment itself is killing the patient (and therefore society).
A perfectly spilled bath with children – thanks to closed schools, literally.
I'm not even talking about the fact that I haven't heard any "What then?" from the supporters of the "hard lockdown" line. So they are only playing with stopping, flattening, but without any plan. Only with the vision of a divine and all-saving vaccine, which, however, may not be long-term at all. Moreover, it may not come in the necessary quantity for everyone until several years later. The virus will always be here and it may happen that the economy, culture and society destroyed by this long convulsion will not really have the strength and especially the finances to take care of those at risk and everything that was done will be much worse and as a result there may be many times more deaths.
I think we need to learn to live normally with the virus and stop scaring people and exaggerating the numbers. After all, this path is now starting slowly. to lean towards Germany too, which is generally a model for us. Maybe it will come to us soon too...
But both paths are essentially paths of faith, and I understood this when I was talking to a mathematician. I told him that the calculations didn't add up and they just didn't know, and he replied that mathematics can work with scale...
So the question is, is it better for a mathematician to tell you that he knows exactly that a dice roll will be 1-6 and will calculate it for you perfectly, or for a philosopher to say that he simply doesn't know which of the numbers from one to six will come up? 😉
Everyone is interested in the same thing, but there must be a consensus on how to achieve it. society – all people.
The consequences of both paths must be put on the table (but with everything and not with adjusted data) and a decision must be made. All opinions and people from many sectors must speak out. The parliament and the senate must decide, and not just a few specific experts on one narrow issue, or various interest groups.
And most importantly, I think that blaming people, concealing, lying, stupid bans and regulations will ultimately do more harm than simple recommendations, truth, and common sense.
