Statistical data for last year is not yet complete, but in the first 50 weeks of last year, approximately 121,000 people died in our country (https://www.czso.cz/csu/czso/obypz_cr) – let's add another 6,300 deaths in the remaining 14 days of 2020 (450 deaths per day).
According to estimates, we could have around 128,000 deaths for the entire year 2020.
(According to unofficial data from the Ministry of the Interior, it is actually "only" 127,072)
Which is of course an increase of approximately 14% compared to 2019 (112,000 deaths), but it still falls short of the values of the 1980s-1990s, where the number of deaths was around 135,000, or even the aforementioned end of World War II, where almost 185,000 people died in 1945.
And that's exactly the manipulation - when some media write a shocking headline "The highest mortality rate in 20 years" - it looks terrible and fits perfectly into the media-spread apocalypse, but if you simply look back 30 years, the reality is different, and if you look back 70 years, it's completely different again...

There is one more important thing interesting about the graph – the constant increase in the number of deaths from 2008 to the present. In 2008, the number of deaths was still around 104,000, and last year we were at 112,000 – and we didn't have any Covid here.
How is that possible?
I like connections and one possible explanation is, for example, the classic numbers of births and deaths. These are not always the same and are the so-called population waves – for example, I myself was born in the 1970s – it was the wave of the so-called „Husák children“ – when around 190,000 children were born annually (today 112,000). And there was a similar wave after the war, when there were very strong cohorts in the 1940s. In 1944, as many as 230,000 children were born – that is, twice as many children as are born today. A huge number.
And imagine, those children are 76 years old today, which happens to be the average life expectancy for men in our country...

Well, Mr. Konvalinko and other fellow "data scientists" - this is simply the reality of life, because a person is a mortal creature and when he is born, he must die at some point. And this is unfortunately happening right now, because the strong generations of 70-80 year old people are dying.
And it is certainly no coincidence that the average age of a person who died of Covid in the Czech Republic is 80 years old.
Of course, no one denies the jump between 2019 and 2020 and the increased number of deaths in a short period associated with Covid, but how many of these deaths are actually due to a disease with a mortality rate of 0.3% (source State Institute of Health) and how much the huge increase in cases where people were simply afraid to go to the doctor, neglected prevention and interventions of all kinds, increased numbers of suicides and other deaths associated with the media's spread of fear and completely unnecessary lockdowns that have not solved and do not solve anything, only time will truly show.
It's simply a matter of context and the fact that this is not a disaster of biblical proportions presented to the media.
But let's not use the words lie and manipulation in connection with Academician Konvalinka - let's use his favorite words untruth and disinformation... 😉
